Abstract: »The thesis focuses on the portrayal of rape in the American press. The first chapter introduces an approach to studying discourse called Critical Discourse Analysis which is later used in the analysis. It briefly describes the origins of CDA, its most prominent figures and the main issues that it is concerned with. Lastly, the criticism that CDA was subjected to over the years is discussed. The second chapter offers a description of previous research on how rape is constructed in society and discourse. The concepts of victim blaming and rape myths are introduced and described as well as the portrayal of rape in media discourse, legal discourse and online discourse. The third chapter consists of an analysis of 50 articles on rape cases from eight American newspapers issued in the period from 2009 to 2019. The study sought to answer the question of whether there is any bias towards rape victims and victim blaming present in the American media discourse nowadays. The analysis revealed that there are instances of victim blaming in the American press, though they are not direct. The process is achieved through implications, allusions, usage of certain terms and stylistic choices made by the authors.« (Source: Jagiellonian University Repository)
